* = Junior

Prizes given were Sam Barr/1st ($60.00 + trophy), Jim Longland/2nd ($22.50), Peter Hess/3rd ($22.50), Ezra Brumbach/1st-B ($12.50), Robert Engstrom/2nd-B ($12.50), Steve Hodgson/1st-C ($10.00), Pat Maloney/2nd-C ($10.00), Terry Helling/1st Junior (trophy), Gregory Perryman/2nd Junior (trophy), and Zack Withers/3rd Junior (trophy). Harold Moye and Stephen Eide elected to try for cash prizes instead of junior trophies.

This year's tournament lacked the usual one or two experts and had only three Class A players. However, there were 14 new unrated players and an all time high of 13 juniors. Sam Barr, starting in 11th position, played strong chess to win and in the last two rounds won from the top two rated players. Ezra Brumbach had another fine tournament and was the highest placing Idaho player. State Champion, Harold Moye, got off to a rocky start, but won his last three games. The tournament was graced by the presence of Chrstianne Hedges, the only girl entered in the tournament, and she was able to win two of her games. Alan Smith of Baltimore came the farthest. Tounament Director was Dick Vandenburg. Quite a few old Idaho open faces were absent including most of the usually large Utah contingent and several regular attenders from South Central Idaho, and Canyon County. We hope the newer players will remain active. Next year's tournament will again be held in Boise either on the weekend before or the one after Mother's Day.
